About Joan

During her career as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Duke University Medical Center,  Joan began painting in 1999. She has taken painting classes through Duke University Continuing Education, The Arts Center in Carrboro, North Carolina, St Petersburg's Art Center in Florida and has gone to "painting camp" at Nimrod Hall for the past five years. After retirement in 2003 she began painting full-time. She often works on location, where her works are influenced by the sea and sky and the bright colors of the Caribbean.  From 2004-2006 she worked  as an assistant to Jane Filer, a noted North Carolina artist. (http://www.janefiler.com). In 2006 she moved to her Bungalow Home in St. Petersburg, Florida and now paints in her studio with the Red Door.
Joan has won several awards for her work and displays her work in her old stomping grounds of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Durham, North Carolina. Currently, her works are for sale at her art studio  "The Red Door" in St. Petersburg, Florida. She is also listed on the tampaartist.com website.

Her works have been purchased by Duke University Medical Center for Cardiology, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, including a large commissioned installation "The Animals of Harmony Bay" and The Pediatric Eye Center. She is a member of the Society for Arts in Health Care.

 John Hopkins University purchased paintings for the new Resident Hall ,Charles Commons that opened in August 2006.

Her animals have homes in two Veterinary Clinics in North Carolina including the paintings "All Good Dogs Go to Heaven" and "All Good Cats Go to Heaven."
